Spanish Class Supply List

Students in grades 3-8 must bring the following supplies to every Spanish class:

  • 1 Composition Notebook (Entire composition notebook must be dedicated to Spanish notes and activities. Spiral notebooks are NOT allowed. Cover may be any color or have any design.)
  • A Place to Keep Loose Papers (e.g. a folder or a section in a binder or accordion file)
  • Colors (crayons or colored pencils…NO markers)
  • Index Cards (to make flashcards)

Spanish Vocabulary List

Here is the 10-page, comprehensive Spanish vocabulary list that I compiled last year (click on link to download in Microsoft Word):

Spanish-Vocabulary-Comprehensive

This list will serve as a useful resource throughout the students’ time at SJS. I do not expect the students to have the entire list memorized by the beginning of the school year. I have divided the list into categories (e.g. La Ropa (Clothing) and Las Estaciones (Seasons)). We will review the previously learned vocabulary and learn the new vocabulary in category groups. I will inform the students in class and will make note on my blog of the category(ies) that we are currently studying in each grade.

Please remember that Quizlet.com offers awesome vocabulary memorization activities!

Vocabulary Memorization Tool

In order to communicate in Spanish, students must learn and retain vocabulary. Quizlet.com offers wonderful vocabulary memorization activities that should prove useful (and maybe even fun) to students in all grades. A few of the SJS parents and I highly recommend it!

Oraciones en Espanol (Prayers in Spanish)

Here are a few traditional Catholic prayers in Spanish (click on link to download in Microsoft Word):

5th Grade Religion: The Complete Picture

During Friday’s class, I briefly introduced the terms High-Christology and Low-Christology, which refer to the 2 methods we can use to study Christ and our Christian religion and faith.

  • High-Christology: emphasizes the divinity (Godliness) of Jesus and focuses on religious facts/truths mainly found in Scripture.
  • Low-Christology: emphasizes the humanity of Jesus and stresses the importance of practicing our faith in our everyday (human) lives.

In our Religion class this year, I hope to help you paint a complete picture of Jesus, who is both fully God and fully human. And, I hope to help you learn the facts/truths of our Christian faith so that you can incorporate them into your daily lives. To achieve these goals:

  • I require that you take notes during class. I will collect and grade your notes at the end of each trimester. I will not be particularly harsh or strict when evaluating your notes. I just want to ensure that you are paying attention in class and that you are developing good note-taking skills.
  • You will have a test at the end of each textbook chapter. We will review prior to each test.
  • We will have an open discussion on Fridays on life and faith. Please remember to drop your questions and comments (with or without your name) into the peach box by Thursday at 3pm so that I may review them prior to Friday’s class.

Welcome Back!

Wow, summer’s over?! Religion classes have already begun and Spanish classes will commence next week.

I hope that you are all excited about this fresh learning experience. As an SJS alumna, I look forward to working with you to make your SJS experience as fun, fulfilling and memorable as mine was.

As we delve into this new school year, please use this blog as your guide and resource.

And, try as I might, I can’t resist adding:

GO SPARTANS! and GO TROJANS!

FIGHT ON!
