El Alfabeto y La Fonetica

SP_Alphabet

Students begin learning el alfabeto (the Spanish alphabet) and la fonetica (Spanish phonics) in 3rd grade.  Currently, in grades 4-8, we are reviewing el alfabeto and la fonetica before we move on to more advanced Spanish grammar (i.e. nouns and verbs).  I am using the PowerPoint linked below as well as the La Pata Pita 2-book series to review and practice with the students in class.  I have also created the Word document below as an additional resource.

Welcome Back PowerPoints

Below are the PowerPoints presented on the first day(s) of Spanish class.  For all grades, they outline my basic expectations, rewards and disciplinary consequences.  For 5th grade and the junior high, they also contain the instructions and the flags for the Spanish-Speaking Countries’ Flags assignment due on Tuesday, September 15th (6th and 8th grades) or Wednesday, September 16th (5th and 7th grades).

Spanish Class Supply List

Students in grades 3-8 must bring the following supplies to every Spanish class:

  • 1 Composition Notebook (Entire composition notebook must be dedicated to Spanish notes and activities.  Spiral notebooks are NOT allowed.  Cover may be any color or have any design.  Student will use the SAME composition notebook from year to year.)
  • A Place Dedicated to Storing Only Loose Spanish Papers (e.g. a folder or a section in a binder or accordion file)
  • Colors (crayons or colored pencils…NO markers)
  • Index Cards (to make flashcards)

Spanish Vocabulary List

Here is the 10-page, comprehensive Spanish vocabulary list that I compiled last year (click on link to download in Microsoft Word):

Spanish-Vocabulary-Comprehensive

This list will serve as a useful resource throughout the students’ time at SJS. I do not expect the students to have the entire list memorized by the beginning of the school year. I have divided the list into categories (e.g. La Ropa (Clothing) and Las Estaciones (Seasons)). We will review the previously learned vocabulary and learn the new vocabulary in category groups. I will inform the students in class and will make note on my blog of the category(ies) that we are currently studying in each grade.

Please remember that Quizlet.com offers awesome vocabulary memorization activities!

Vocabulary Memorization Tool

In order to communicate in Spanish, students must learn and retain vocabulary. Quizlet.com offers wonderful vocabulary memorization activities that should prove useful (and maybe even fun) to students in all grades. A few of the SJS parents and I highly recommend it!
